What will it take ?
I have been a nurse for 31 years and I have never known a time before now where the patients have been sicker, with more co-morbidities and are more demanding.Clearly, our work loads have increased but our working conditions have deteriorated. It is a fact that we are loosing more highly skilled nurses due to the increased workloads ,intense pressures and the stress of our jobs.Covid has exacerbated the problems.I urge our politicians to open their eyes and see that our health system is in the Danger Zone right now.Action to be taken is NOW .We can’t afford to have more nurses leave, but that’s what will happen.Honestly,What Will it take for our government to see that our system is failing? Totally collapse? God forbid .Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away, but this is the stance our government has taken.Ultimately, patients and nurses will suffer if the current situation continues.NSW health tells us not to strike. In other words just keep going until you can’t do it anymore and we’ll find someone else. The problem with this is there may be no one else left to find.Implementing and legislating correct nurse to patient ratios is right. We just need the government to understand this and do it.
