The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association released a statement to commemorate National Reconciliation week.

This week is the 20^th anniversary of the first National Reconciliation Week and the Walk for Reconciliation across the Sydney Harbour Bridge when we came together to show our support for a more reconciled Australia.

On May 28, 2000, 250,000 people turned out for the Walk for Reconciliation across Sydney’s Harbour Bridge, setting a milestone in the process of reconciliation between Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians. The support for reconciliation was the largest political demonstration ever to be held in Australian history. The event was part of Corroboree 2000 – held on the first two days of National Reconciliation Week in Sydney.

The walk proved public sentiment was moving towards a reconciliation process. Much has been achieved since then although there is much more to be done.

The NSWNMA is committed to playing our role when it comes to reconciliation by developing our community in a way that values Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures.  We are all In This Together.
