Social Justice & Action
We’re backing the Voice to Parliament, here’s why
In 2018, NSWNMA delegates passed a resolution in support of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Core to this initiative is a proposal to establish an Indigenous Voice that is enshrined in the Constitution.
In acting on the democratic decision of members, the NSWNMA is formally supporting the Voice campaign and the ongoing pursuit of positive health and social outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our constitution is more than 120 years old, yet it still doesn’t formally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As a trade union, we firmly support issues of social justice and we take an active role in promoting and supporting positive outcomes for all communities.
Nurses and midwives are responsible for caring for the health of all Australians and we remain committed to lifting up the voice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The establishment of an Indigenous Voice enshrined in the Constitution will allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to advise our nation’s decision-makers on the policies, laws and health outcomes that impact their communities.
