The NSW Nurses and Midwives Association (NSWNMA) has long been a strong supporter of the introduction of voluntary assisted dying (VAD) legislation in NSW.
We know the majority of our members support voluntary assisted dying, and for many years, we have advocated to ensure people with an incurable illness are afforded the choice to die with dignity.
On 19 May 2022, NSW Parliament passed the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022.
NSW Heath is hosting a webinar this afternoon on Wednesday, 1 February at 5.30pm to communicate the plans to make voluntary assisted dying available in NSW from 28 November 2023.
This is an opportunity to ask the implementation team any questions regarding the details of the bill.
This follows the introduction of VAD in Queensland and South Australia on January 1 and January 31 respectively. This is an important milestone in providing a compassionate, end-of-life choice for many terminally ill individuals. See more information on how the SA VAD regime will work here.
In 2021, in a survey of almost 4,000 NSWNMA members, 86% supported voluntary assisted dying law reform in NSW, while 84% indicated they had professional experience providing care to terminally ill patients, and over half of those (53%) said they had been asked to help end a patients’ life.
This legislation is clearly important to our members, and we will continue campaigning to ensure that Nurse Practitioners and registered nurses who choose to participate in voluntary assisted dying are supported and have appropriate resources and training.
