International Council of Nurses Chief Executive Howard Catton has described nursing as “one of the most dangerous jobs in the world at the moment”, as statistics show that over 600 nurses have succumbed to the disease internationally, with numbers continually on the rise.
The Council’s analysis, based on data gathered by the US’ National Nurses United, has shown that 7% of all cases of COVID-19 are of healthcare workers. This has meant that approximately 230,000 healthcare workers – including nurses and midwives – have contracted the disease since the pandemic began.
Many of these workers contracted the disease in their line of duty, as nurses working on the frontlines of COVID-19.
The Council has implored governments to “act to protect [nurses’] health and save lives”.
“This must not be allowed to continue and the Council demands that action is taken now to put this situation right”, said Mr Catton.
