Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). First observed on 17 May 2005, it lands on the same day the World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder only 33 years ago in 1990.
IDAHOBIT draws attention to the discrimination and violence experienced by the LGBTQIA+ community globally. It represents the ongoing struggle for recognition, acceptance, and equality across the spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities.
Since its origin, it has grown exponentially and is now observed in over 130 countries.
Inclusivity in healthcare is an absolute necessity for the provision of wholistic and compassionate care. When healthcare workers, patients, and institutions embody inclusivity, a safe, respectful, and understanding environment is fostered where everyone feels valued and accepted.
This leads to increased job satisfaction, improved mental health, and better patient care.
Open and inclusive healthcare is also critical for LGBTQIA+ patients who have historically faced significant disparities in healthcare due to stigma, discrimination, and a lack of understanding. This extends past non-discrimination, but actively acknowledging and valuing the diverse identities of people.
The NSWNMA is a proud supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and will always advocate for justice and acceptance, in and out of the workplace.
Today, we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and all that the community brings to the world, while also acknowledging we have a long way to go before true equality is universal.
