Not all of us go to uni straight out of school. Some of us come in to it with kids, jobs and a whole other life outside university. Here are 5 tips to help you through as a mature aged nursing student.
- Balance your priorities
We talk about work-life balance, so why not a work-study balance at uni? Look at your studies in the broader context of your life – it’ll make things a lot easier
- Make the most of what you’ve got
As a mature aged student, you’re going to be pretty time and resource poor. Regardless, make the most of the opportunities that life throws at you. Whether it’s networking events, nursing forums or courses run by your union, there is a world of resources at your fingertips.
- Use your support network
Your friends and family will be invaluable during this journey. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – even it’s for something like looking after the kids!
- Don’t be afraid to ask for an extension
Your lecturers are often parents as well, so they will understand what you’re going through. If you’re struggling with an assessment due to external factors, make sure you ask for an extension. The worst that can happen is for them to say no.
- Engage with your peers when you have a chance
Uni can be a pretty isolating place, especially for mature aged students. Making a few friends while on campus can make the experience a little bit easier, and a little bit more enjoyable.
