The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation has condemned violent protesters that attacked a union building in Melbourne.
The protesters took to the streets and damaged property outside a Victorian union building in opposition to lockdown restrictions. Some of the protesters posed as union members and waved unauthorised union placards.
Lisa Fitzpatrick, General Secretary of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (Victorian Branch) described the incident as “pointless violence”.
“Nurses and midwives are exhausted and frustrated as they watch protesters fight for their right to overwhelm our health system,” she said.
“We condemn those who created fake protest posters using our name, incorrectly, to create fraudulent legitimacy”.
Fitzpatrick called on the community to engage in “respectful dialogue” when discussing COVID-19 restrictions.
“We are calling for common sense and voices of reason to prevail.
“Do not leave all the heavy lifting to nurses, midwives and personal care workers”.
