Following a concerted effort from the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association’s (NSWNMA) Work Health & Safety (WHS) Team, a number of employers are providing fit testing for staff working at their aged care facilities.
Fit testing is a test protocol conducted to verify the size, make and model of respirators (including P2/N95 masks), so they are both comfortable and provide the wearer with the expected protection. Read more on our Fit Testing and Fit Checking for Aged Care Factsheet here.
Conducting fit testing for aged care staff on an annual basis is in line with Australian Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) and the Infection Control Expert Group guidance, which provide instructions for residential aged care facilities on how to meet their requirements in relation to personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers.
These instructions clearly outline reasonably practicable measures for residential aged care facilities to ensure all staff should have access to P2/N95 respirators (masks) which must have been fit tested prior to use if they work within a resident zone where there are suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases.
P2/N95 masks, should always be worn instead of a surgical mask if risk assessment suggests a likely high risk of transmission (e.g. when working with COVID-19 positive patients).
Nurses and midwives working in in the public health system have had access to fit testing for over a year, which has reduced COVID-19 infections and helped save lives.
By fit testing its staff, aged care employers are helping improve safety for both staff and residents at their aged care facilities. This is particularly important in light of the ongoing pandemic and the history of deaths that have occurred in the aged care sector as a result of COVID-19.
The NSWNMA has received confirmation from the following aged care providers that fit testing programs for staff are already underway or are soon to be rolled out:
- Advantaged Care
- Bupa Aged Care
- Calvarycare Aged Care
- Hammond Care
- Heritage Care
- Uniting
The NSWNMA continues to make representations to other aged care providers about fit testing of staff at their facilities.
Aged care staff are encouraged to read through the NSWNMA factsheet on Fit checking & fit testing of P2/N95 masks for residential aged care.
