I work part time and have a contract for 24 hours work per week. My manager recently told me they would be cutting my hours due to a roster review. I cannot afford to reduce my hours. Can they do this?

Your employer cannot change your contract of employment without your agreement. Your contract of employment is an agreement between you and your employer, and your employer cannot unilaterally change any term, especially your minimum contracted hours of work.  

It is not uncommon, however, for employers to give employees the impression that they are able to make changes without your agreement. You should: 

1. make it clear to your employer that you do not wish to reduce your contacted hours and seek clarification of what will occur if you do not agree to any reduction and  
2. ask for their proposal or position regarding this to be put in writing.  

If your employer continues to pressure you to agree to a reduction in hours, or if your hours are reduced on the roster, you should contact NSWNMA immediately.
