Ask Katrina: Knowing your rights on a performance improvement plan
I am an Enrolled Nurse and I’ve been put on a performance improvement plan (PIP) – how do I know if it’s being handled fairly and is actually meant to support me?
A fair and supportive PIP should give you a genuine opportunity to successfully complete it. This includes making sure you are clearly informed of the concerns about your performance, with real examples, and that you are given a meaningful opportunity to provide input before the plan is finalised.
The plan should include:
- the identified performance concerns based on the standards of practice for an enrolled nurse, with clear learning objectives
- an action plan outlining support and strategies
- clear, measurable expectations so you know what success looks like, along with realistic and well defined timeframes
- agreed evaluation criteria and regular review points
- practical support such as training, guidance, or regular check ins
You shouldn’t feel like you are being set up to fail. The focus should be on supporting you to improve, not punishing you. Open communication, consistency, and a process that is free from bias are all key signs that the plan is being handled the way it should be.
