Ask Katrina: Blocking union support
I recently had my shifts cut and my manager has told me that I cannot raise the matter with the union as it is operational and “not a union matter”. Is that right?
No. Your employer cannot prevent or discourage you from speaking with your union. As a union member, you have the right to seek advice, support and representation from your union about any workplace issue.
Employers and individual managers can face serious consequences for attempting to discourage, pressure, or coerce employees into not contacting their union.
Reductions to shifts can have significant financial and personal impacts and, depending on the circumstances, may be unlawful. This is precisely the type of issue your union can assist with.
You are fully entitled to contact your union for advice and support. Please get in touch with us as soon as possible so we can help you further.
