I am from a non-English speaking background and have just completed my Bachelor of Nursing in Australia. I am seeking registration through Ahpra for the first time, and I am being asked to provide evidence of English language competency. Why do I need to do this when I graduated in Australia?

To get registration in Australia, every applicant must meet the NMBA English language skills standard. This includes Australian-trained or overseas qualified applicants. This standard supports registered health practitioners to practise safely in Australia. The standard does not apply to students but does apply to graduates and anyone seeking registration in Australia for the first time. There are various pathways to proving English language competency so it’s best to check out the NMBA English language skills pathway selection tool and select the pathway that best applies to you.
