Young people to be affected by COVID-19 throughout their working lives: Productivity Commission
The Productivity Commission has found that the COVID-19 recession will continue to affect the job prospects of young people throughout their entire working lives, trapping them in lower-paid and lower-skilled roles.
The recent report shows that those currently aged in their 20s and 30s are trapped in a hyper-competitive jobs market, where many are taking on lower-skilled employment, to the detriment of their career progression.
The pandemic has also exacerbated the youth unemployment crisis, with the unemployment rate now at 13.9% for those aged between 20 and 24.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions has urged the Morrison Government to intervene, calling on them to “step up and invest in the future”.
“Only the Government can deliver a national economic recovery plan to begin to rebuild our economy”, said Michele O’Neil, President of the ACTU.
“The Government [needs to] urgently intervene in the jobs market, otherwise young people will suffer the effects of this recession their entire working lives”.
The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association, your union in nursing and midwifery, will continue to advocate for jobs and fair career progression for all current and future members of our profession. Join us today.
