AHPRA Audits of nurses and midwives: What you need to know
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is responsible for auditing nurses and midwives on behalf of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Nurses and midwives are audited to ensure that they are complying with the registration standards.
AHPRA conducts random audits on a regular basis throughout the year, including at the time of registration renewal. You can be audited at any time with respect to any registration period over the last five years.
If you have been selected to be audited, you will receive notification from AHPRA on behalf of the NMBA, advising what registration standard(s) you are being audited against. You may be audited against one or more of the registration standards:
- Recency of practice
- Continuing professional development
- Professional indemnity insurance and
- Criminal history
You will receive an audit checklist outlining the supporting documents you need to provide as evidence of your compliance with the registration standard(s). You will be required to return the completed checklist and evidence by the due date in the correspondence.
Being audited by AHPRA doesn’t have to be a stressful experience:
- It is important to read the audit checklist and letter carefully to understand what evidence you have been asked to provide and when you need to provide it.
- Be familiar with the relevant registration standards, codes, standards for practice, guidelines, fact sheets and policies that are available on the NMBA website.
- Contact the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association if you have any questions or need further advice.
