Disgusted members of the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) gathered outside of John Hunter Hospital, outraged over the Berejiklian Government’s public sector wage freeze.
Members of the NSWNMA John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospital Branch are angered by the 0.3% pay offer, with some nurses forced to accept a rise of just 7 cents an hour, or $2.90 per week.
Nurses and midwives gathered community support on the street, waving signs saying “we’re worth more than a cup of coffee” and “we deserve fair wages”.
Suzanne McNeill, NSWNMA John Hunter Hospital Branch Secretary, said many nurses and midwives have been left demoralised and are calling on the government to honour its 2.5% annual rise instead.
“This 0.3% offer is a shocking outcome, considering what we have all endured this year,” said Ms McNeill.
“Every day, we’ve come to work and faced potential exposure to COVID-19 and the risks of taking it home to our loved ones or the communities we are here to protect.
“Slashing our hard-earned wages like this for twelve months is disgraceful. It’s left nurses and midwives with a bitter taste, after all we’ve put in throughout this pandemic.”
