Aged care nurses highlight urgent need for safe staffing
Aged care nurses and supporters gathered outside Member for McMahon, Chris Bowen’s office in south western Sydney to send a message to Canberra.
With the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety due to hand down its final report by 26 February, members of the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) are calling on the Morrison Government, and all political parties, to act.
Over the coming weeks, aged care nurses from Broken Hill to the Blue Mountains, Byron Bay to Albury will highlight the need for staffing ratios and greater transparency of government funding.
The NSWNMA says the Morrison Government cannot continue to stall on its responsibility to urgently fix the aged care sector.

More than 30 residents is not good enough to have only 1 RN as its does not provide good nursing care and also stressful for the staff

work at aged facility with 80+ residents and 1 RN around the clock and a second between 830-5…. it is amazing how good quality nursing goes out the window

I have worked in aged care settings for more than 20 years and I have seen how busy is aged care facility
Marcia Quinton says
I have worked in aged care for 30 odd years and during that time the direct care to residents has lowered. Due to lowered staff ratios, with less experience and training. In addition to continual increasing paper load required both by the industry and government. The need of the residents has also increased as they are often frailer and have more medical issues requiring more specialized care and supervision. As the number of qualified staff decreased the problems increased around the care due to staff being over worked and not enough time to fulfill all residents needs. The huge impact is the semi isolation for residents, due to staff not having enough time to spend with the residents. Any activities provided by facilities were often limited to those who can participate also due to time constraints. While other residents simply needed a caring person around them for comfort which rarely happened except through nursing staff.
Families members not always being able to be there with them to spend time comforting them.
