Advancing evidence-based practice in healthcare

Despite widespread recognition of the importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) and its potential to enhance care quality, patient outcomes, and cost-effectiveness, its implementation in routine healthcare settings worldwide remains surprisingly low. JBI seeks to understand the reasons behind this persistent challenge.

Integrating evidence into practice is no easy task. Healthcare professionals encounter significant barriers at the individual, team, and organisational levels when trying to adopt EBP into their daily clinical routines.

Most studies on EBP have focused on acute hospital settings within specific geographic locations, potentially overlooking the diverse challenges in other healthcare settings.

There is a pressing need for research that focuses on the perspectives and practices of healthcare professionals, including nurses, midwives, General Practitioners (GPs), allied health professionals and carers in various healthcare settings worldwide.

To address this gap, JBI is conducting a comprehensive global survey. The aim is to understand healthcare professionals’ and carers’ perceptions and preferences regarding accessing and using evidence in clinical decision-making.

“This knowledge is critical for understanding the facilitators and barriers to implementing evidence into practice. It will aid in developing innovative solutions for the practical integration of evidence into healthcare structures worldwide”, said Prof Zoe Jordan, Executive Director of JBI.

Survey results will be accessible online. This information will ensure evidence providers meet the needs of those in acute, primary, aged care, and community settings and guide healthcare organisations and policymakers on the best ways to support evidence integration into practice.

Every Nurse’s Business

Every Nurse’s Business is a Continued Professional Development (CPD) programme and online learning site for Australian Registered Nurses to help build nursing capacity to address the healthcare needs of people with intellectual disability (ID) and/or autism (ASD) in mainstream health settings.

Purpose of the learning site:

  • To build capacity for RNs to address the healthcare needs of people with Intellectual Disability (ID) and/or Autism (ASD) in mainstream health settings (including primary health).

Relevance of project to Nurses:

  • The health challenges and service needs of people with ID and/or ASD are greater than those without intellectual and developmental disorders.
  • People with ID face greater risk for chronic and complex health conditions (epilepsy, hypothyroidism and cardiac issues), greater hospitalisation, readmission and complications following hospitalisation.
  • People with ASD have higher health risks across the lifespan including greater risk of mortality, disproportionate levels of chronic illness, and are less likely to receive primary care intervention to mitigate risk.
  • As people with ID and/or ASD regularly present in mainstream healthcare settings (including primary health), it is important that RNs feel comfortable and confident when communicating with, and addressing the needs of this cohort.
  • There has also been a gap in undergraduate nursing curricula regarding content and clinical placement specific to caring for people with ID/ASD. This free programme helps to supplement this gap.

Background to Every Nurse’s Business:

This research is led by Professor Andrew Cashin at Southern Cross University and supported by Associate Professor Nathan Wilson (University of Western Sydney), Amy Pracilio and Michelle Kersten (Southern Cross University). The research team holds interest in nursing experiences of addressing the healthcare needs of people with ID/ASD and building the capacity of Australian nurses to do so.

The first component of this project involved a survey of Australian Registered Nurses conducted in June, 2020 which identified undergraduate education experiences in terms of formal learning and dedicated practicum that focused on addressing the healthcare needs of people with ID/ASD and related postgraduate education and CPD undertaken. Additionally, RNs were asked about their self-perceived comfort, preparedness, and confidence in addressing the healthcare needs of people with ID/ASD.

Findings from this initial survey, and a scoping review of relevant literature, have informed the development of the online learning curriculum for graduate nurses aimed to promote the capacity of nurses in mainstream hospital and community health services. The curriculum includes foundational learning content distributed through professional nursing bodies in Australia to their membership and the development of a learning site to test foundational knowledge, and house intermediate and advanced curricula.

Structure of the Learning Site:

  • Foundation: This is currently a quiz to claim 1 CPD hour following exposure to the foundational learning content through the white labelling phase. This includes a ‘revision’ option which will include a folder holding all previous shared content (one-pagers, tiles, and videos).
  • Intermediate:  This is separated into 7 learning domains (care imperatives, communication to people with ID/ASD, communication from people with ID/ASD, environments of care, making things go well, supporting positive behaviour, and introduction to the NDIS). This involves blocks of learning and a variety of information, videos, vignettes, interviews, activities, and further reading under the six domains. It also includes a quiz worth 4 hours towards CPD.
  • Advanced: This section is completed, and includes interactive content, independent research tasks, and synchronous learning sessions on different topics/areas of practice. Every synchronous learning session is worth 1 hour of CPD.
  • Completion of the learning material at the foundational, intermediate, and advanced levels and satisfactory completion of the optional assessment will be deemed to be equivalent to one unit of AQF level 8 postgraduate study. This can be presented to universities to consider for advanced standing.

Internationally Qualified Nurses and the transition to the Aged Care Sector in Australia

Are you a Internationally Qualified Registered Nurse working in Aged Care? Registered Nurse and Sydney University PHD Student, Louise Sheehy wants to hear from you.

Her research seeks to investigate and deepen understanding of the lived experience of Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses (IQN) who have transitioned to the Australian Nursing workforce and are working in the residential aged care setting.

We would like to invite you to take part in a 60-90 minute one-to-one interview session either face to face or via zoom if you:

  • Have completed a relevant bridging course leading to AHPRA registration in Australia;
  • Are a Registered Nurse with current registration with AHPRA
  • Are currently working in the aged care sector of Australia
  • Have been working in Aged Care for a minimum of twelve (12) months

To thank you for your time, participants will receive a $50 Westfield Gift Card upon the completion of your interview.

LGBT+ employees in religiously affiliated workplaces

Do you identify as LGBTQ+? Is your workplace religiously affiliated? We would like to hear from you!

Researchers at the University of Tasmania are conducting a survey to better understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ people in religiously affiliated workplaces. Examples of such workplaces include Christian and Islamic schools, private hospitals such as Catholic affiliated hospitals, social welfare agencies such as Anglicare, and aged care facilities such as Jewish or Salvation Army aged care. The study is being conducted in conjunction with the University of Sydney and University of Ottawa.

We want to ensure that the voices of LGBTQ+ people are heard in current debates about LGBTQ+ rights and religious freedom.

We are asking people to complete a survey – please go to either of the links below. It will take about 20 minutes to complete. Project ID: 23410. The survey is open until September 2021.

Search engine for clinicians involved in clinical decision making

Calling all GPs, hospital clinicians, nurses and 4th year medical students.

Researchers from CSIRO (Australian eHealth Research Centre) and
Queensland University of Technology are conducting a user study to test
a search engine designed to provide clinicians with succinct, accurate
and evidence-based information for clinical decision making.

They need your help to test a new online clinical search system. You will
be asked to respond to a number of clinical scenarios over a 2 hour, online
assessment of the system. This can be performed from your
home/office at a time to suit you, across a 2 week period.
The purpose of the study is to better understand clinician needs and
behaviour whilst resolving a clinical problem, and ultimately to provide a
better system to support improved patient outcomes.

To participate you will require a computer, connected to the internet with
a standard internet browser. Participants completing the assessment will
be compensated with a $50 Gift Card honorarium, access to the study
findings and if desired, relative feedback on their clinical decision making
results within the sample set. The study was approved by QUT’s
University Human Research Ethics Committee (1700000215).
